I’m surprised at how many times i see Wordpress bloggers not making use of the custom URL (or permalink) structure option for that extra bit of search engine optimisation goodness.
By default, Wordpress will give your permalinks a url that looks something like this: www.scott.za.net/?p=3. This clearly means nothing to anyone. Why not have it look something like: www.scott.za.net/blog_post_title-120407? This way your title will be incorporated into the url which then gives you, me, and google a better understanding of what the page is all about. (See Mystery meat navigation)
How to:
From WP dashboard > Option > Permalinks. Choose how you’d like it set up. I made a custom structure: /%postname%_%year%-%monthnum%-%day%/ but my guess is that “Date and Name based” is probably just as good.
Now you know.
