Knysna wireless

I am just loving this….

Knysna is pretty much covered in a blanket of free wireless. I’m sitting up in the valley with a steaming cuppa joe, looking over the lagoon, perusing my feeds, and typing this.

Uninet, a company that “(provides) appropriate, affordable and reliable wireless services and infrastructure for commercial and social purposes in South Africa and the Southern Africa region.” is the team behind the rollout of the service.

So far, my experience with it has been great. Skype works great, saturday morning download speeds (firefox 2.0 from a russian server) are about 9KB/sec - which is not crazy fast but I am up in the suburbs tucked away in the valley behind the town.

It’s projects like this that makes me so excited to be in the industry that i am. The more of these project that are implemented, the closer we get to internet for all. The ability for anyone in the town who has access to a computer to google something, skype somebody, or IM a friend, all for free is the way it should be.
