Ananzi (the largest search engine??) now optimising for Google…

March 5th, 2008 · Comments

I’d like to get some thoughts from the search optimisation community about this latest attempt from Ananzi to drum up some business…

My initial questions:
1 - What the hell is Ananzi doing?
2 - Are Ananzi REALLY the largest search engine in Africa?
3 - Not really a question, but I’d like to say that I consider this type of email to be SPAM, especially without any kind of unsubscribe link etc. It’s kind of sad really..

Here’s the email:

Attention : Scott

Ananzi Search Engine has created a package for you to optimise your search ranking to a very favourable position on 4 of the major Search Engines, namely,
Google - www.google.co.za ; MSN - www.msn.com ; Yahoo - www.yahoo.com ; Ananzi - www.ananzi.co.za . If this is done by you or your search engine optimiser it could take 6 - 12 months BUT with Ananzi you would be able to view your favourable ranking on these search engines within 6 weeks. This is due to the fact that Ananzi is South Africas largest Search Engine and we already have a high ranking on Google other search engines.

Ananzi Quick Pages - What do you get ?

2 Pages of content that would be written by our SEO (Search Engine Optimiser). This content would be exclusively written for the Quick Pages feature and this content would be monitored by our SEO. If the SEO notices your company going down the ranking on any of the Search Engines then he would update your content to keep you in a favourable ranking. The pages consist of the write-up and contact details of your company. It also provides a link direct to your website.
You would also have a Banner ; button and Skyscraper advert on the page that would allow you to promote your companies Products / Services. This Banner / Skyscraper or button can be sold by you to one of your clients and can generate revenue for you. These adverts will be changed on a monthly basis as it would help in optimising the company across the Search Engines.

2 Keywords plus company name that would be featured on www.ananzi.co.za , search result pages on the extreme right.

20 meta keywords on Google, MSN and Yahoo.

To promote the Quick Page link we would serve your link on the Home Page of Ananzi which is receiving over 15 million page impressions per month. This link would feature the brand name / product name.

The above package would be at an investment of R1881.00 per month incl vat for 12 months. This would cost much more if done by yourself up to R5000 or more.

Payment can go off on an easy payment debit order on the 8 or last day of every month.

Please let me know if I must send through an insertion order.

I look forward to a favourable response.

Kind Regards

  • I have been with Ananzi for six months under Magaliesburg accommodation page 4 Google and Yahoo page4 . magaliesberg accommodation page 4 I pay R2000 a month and phone and fight with them regularly. My own sight ranks higher under some of my keywords and I made it my self. Please search for your self. rosewellspa
  • Hi Ryan

That is really disappointing. R2000 sounds like far too much to be spending
on something like this. I think you would be better off running your own pay
per click campaigns on sites like google. With that sort of budget, i reckon
    you would go pretty far.

Yes I am doing that and it is the best way I see my one ranking number is wronge. I have just checked all my key words.
Magaliesburg accommodation Google page2,Yahoo page 4
    B&B magaliesburg 1,1

    Magaliesburg spa treatment 1,1

    Magaliesburg spa accommodation 1

    magaliesburg health spa 1

    Magaliesburg Guesthouse 1

Magaliesberg accommodation 5 ,6 wind in the willows is higher on there usual free ananzi listing

    Magaliesberg bed and breakfast 2

    Magaliesberg guest house 1
after 6 months they should all be at the top of page one
  • i think the term "Magaliesburg accommodation" is quite a bit broader/generic
than the others, which is perhaps why it is struggling a bit.

remember, the best way to do well on search engines is to have incoming
    links pointing to your site.

also a thought - it could be a good idea to do a little bit of optimisation
    for mis-spellings of "Accommodation" I often spell it with 1 "m" or 1 "c"
and i reckon it could get you some quick wins.

Thank you very much I will do that Regards Ryan
  • Ha!! actually had them call me assuring me that they could get my company to number one in Google because they have a special deal. I was feeling pretty crap that day so didn't bother taking them to task. But I wonder if it's worth reporting them to Google for making unsubstantiated claims... but more importantly they are using Google's name for their own ill gains. I know that while many of us will just laugh there will be a fair few that will actually fall for it!
  • What a bunch of loons, they must be very strategically lost to be flailing at revenue like this.
  • Catherine
Wait I don't understand...so Ananzi is asking you to pay THEM to write some content mentioning you because their pages do well in these search engines? Kind of crazy.
  • eish - wtf indeed?
I must also say that after doing a listing last week I immediately got a phone call from an iol rep offering me an 'amazing ad deal' that would boost my ananzi rankings - it was the usual spray and pray stuff. I was never a fan and I'm certainly not now...
  • WTF?! Sheesh, they've gone from mad to worse...
  • Ananzi are a joke. They issued a press release about a month after Mango Airlines was launched saying they where received over 400 searches for Mango Airlines.

One of my humble blogs was getting 400 hits a DAY for "Mango Airlines" from Google, MSN and the likes in the same time period.

    Spam? Oh yes!
